Community 'Tree Rescue' Days at Papakura Stream
We have two 'Tree Rescue' days to help us free up our young native plants from weeds and give them the best chance of survival!
These special community events are part of the Auckland Junior Landcare Trust Legacy Project, a collaboration between CVNZ, New Zealand Landcare Trust, and Bupa, bringing together community members, rangatahi, Bupa residents and volunteers from across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Once our native trees and shrubs have been planted, we need to return to our planting sites to continue caring for them for the next 3- 5 years. Strangling weeds such as bindweed and kikuyu grass can often grow rapidly and smother juvenile trees. Caring for these plants is a big job, and we couldn't do it without your help.
At 63 kilometres long and with a catchment of 4,100 hectares, the Papakura Stream is a significant freshwater system. This area was once covered in indigenous forest, including kahikatea swamp, but most of this habitat has been lost due to agriculture, industry and urban development. The Papakura Stream Restoration Project aims to improve the health of the stream and the wider catchment through fencing of unprotected stream sections to keep livestock out of the stream and to protect mature trees, removing invasive weeds and litter, and restoration planting along riparian margins and surrounding areas to restore linkages between indigenous forest remnants and the stream.
The day will finish with celebratory snacks to thank volunteers for their hard work. For this volunteer day you are welcome to meet us on site, or at our office in Mount Eden to get a ride in our van (by prior arrangement). Please contact info@cvnz.org.nz to secure your spot.

What to wear: Appropriate outdoor clothing (lightweight long-sleeved clothing and tough trousers are needed to protect yourself from cuts and scratches and insect bites/stings). Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and something you don't mind getting muddy (gumboots, hiking shoes, work boots, trainers).
CVNZ will supply all of the tools and equipment required for the day. Please bring with you a hat, raincoat/waterproof jacket, sunblock, a snack, full water bottle and any medication you may need (hayfever medication, inhalers etc). We will have extra water to refill bottles, sunblock, snacks and insect repellent with us on the day.
Both days go from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Saturday 3rd October and Thursday 8th October.
