Native plant rescue
The Whau River Catchment Trust is a non-profit environmental group, delivering ecological restoration projects all across the catchment with the support of our amazing west Auckland community. We are holding a weeding bee to care for our local environment at Craigavon Park, Connaught Street in Blockhouse Bay. Together, we’ll be working to remove invasive weedy grasses that are crowding out our native grasses, helping create the space they need to thrive. No plant knowledge or prior experience is needed - you'll be helped on the day to learn how to tell the difference between the weedy and native grasses. If there's any time left, we'll also be spreading mulch over the ground to stop the weeds from springing back again. It’s a great opportunity to spend time outdoors, connect with others, and make a positive impact in your local park. We'll be meeting on the grass just below the carpark on Connaught Street. We’d love to see you there!
Please bring sturdy, closed-in shoes (old sneakers, tramping shoes or gumboots are best - no sandals or jandals); clothing suitable for working outdoors; and a drink bottle. If it's raining the event may still go ahead, so bring a raincoat if it looks like it might be wet. No experience required. Volunteers under 12yo must have adult supervision.
Up to 3 hours, starting at 9:00am and finishing up around midday. You don't need to come for the whole time - just whatever you can manage.
