🌿 Weeding Bee at Verbena Stream

🧤 What We’ll Be Doing -

We’ll be working together to restore the native bush and stream area by controlling wild ginger, lilies, climbinig asparagus, jasmine, and honeysuckle.

This work helps protect the mature native trees (like Tānekaha, Rewarewa, Tōtara, and Tītoki) and supports the thriving birdlife including kererū, tūī, ruru, wax-eyes, fantails, and grey warblers. By removing weeds, we support stream flow and maintain conditions that can help reduce the impacts of flooding.

🌱 Why This Matters -

This event is part of the Community Flood Resilience (CFR) programme, which has been building relationships and ecological awareness across Birkdale. Pest Free Kaipatiki has already hosted two stream cleanups and a workshop, and this time collaborating with CVNZ under Wai Care support. This weeding bee is a chance to learn about flooding processes and how to be prepared for a flood event, build community resilience and to support local biodiversity.

Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or a local resident passionate about your stream, we’d love to have you join us. Let’s work together to restore Verbena Stream back to a healthy waterway.

🙋 Volunteers Needed -

We’re looking for volunteers who are physically fit and comfortable working on a hillside. We will provide tools and kai for that day. Bring your gumboots if you have them. Minor under 15 is not recommended.

Requirements:

For this volunteer day, you are welcome to meet us onsite at 10am.

Direction: Head towards 90A Verbena Road, Birkdale. Look out for the CVNZ flag and sign guiding you to the stream. Roadside parking only.

If you need a ride from Mt Eden, please meet at 8.30am at 10 New North Rd, Eden Terrace. Seats are limited in our vans, so you MUST contact Teresa Ma at tma@cvnz.org.nz or text 021496890 to reserve a seat.

What to wear: Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and something you don’t mind getting muddy (gumboots, hiking shoes, work boots, trainers), appropriate outdoor clothing (lightweight long-sleeved clothing and tough trousers are needed to protect yourself from cuts and scratches and insect bites/stings).

What to bring: CVNZ will supply all of the tools and equipment required for the day. Please bring with you a hat, raincoat/waterproof jacket, sunblock, a snack, full water bottle and any medication you may need (hayfever medication, inhalers etc).
