Volunteer Coordinator
Motutapu Restoration Trust (MRT) was established in 1994 to restore the natural and historic landscapes of Motutapu, and to provide opportunities for the community to be involved in conservation volunteering. Since then, thousands of Trust volunteers have planted over half a million trees, transforming over one hundred hectares of bare pasture into native forest habitat. The habitat restoration, along with the eradication of mammalian pests which was completed by DOC in 2011, has allowed a number of native birds to be reintroduced including Takahē, Kiwi and Tīeke. MRT continues to work alongside mana whenua Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and DOC to restore the mauri of Motutapu through ongoing work regenerating native habitats and controlling invasive weeds, to ensure the island thrives as a sanctuary for native flora and fauna.
The Trust work is delivered almost solely by volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator role is therefore at the heart of what we do! In this role you would work with our Operations Manager and Volunteer Leaders, with responsibility for:
- Promoting volunteer opportunities through digital media (email, website, and social media).
- Managing volunteer registrations, including responding to inquiries and entering volunteer data into a database.
- Ensuring volunteers receive necessary information about activities, health and safety, and their roles.
- Organising volunteer leaders and providing them with information about who is attending volunteer days.
- Maintaining volunteer records and providing updates and reporting.
There is also the opportunity to get involved in volunteer recruitment strategies and volunteer experience improvements.
To be successful in this role you will need strong interpersonal skills along with database management and Google Suite proficiency (we use Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets etc.).
You will have some experience with community groups and volunteer management, or at least experience as a volunteer yourself. Experience in conservation, social media, and digital marketing is also desirable.
Approximately 5-10 hours per week.
Hours are flexible allowing you to work in the evenings or weekends if you prefer. We would ideally like someone who is able to participate in weekend volunteer days on Motutapu occasionally to meet volunteers and understand restoration activities, but otherwise this is a great opportunity to contribute to conservation outcomes without leaving home.
