Join the Whau Environmental Monitoring Club

Each month we will be running a community event based around environmental monitoring. Events will involve either doing a biodiversity survey using the iNaturalist app, or doing Wai Care tests to measure stream water quality. By taking part, you will become a citizen scientist by collecting data which can then be used to inform environmental restoration work, while at the same time getting to learn all about and experience the rich ecology (both natural and not) of the Whau catchment.

Requirements:

No experience is required. Bring outdoor clothing, sunhat and sunscreen, and sturdy, comfortable shoes, plus plenty to drink and any snacks you might want. For the iNaturalist surveys, you will need a mobile device with a camera, access to data, and the iNaturalist app downloaded. Don't worry if you've never used the app before - we'll show you all you need to know! For Wai Care testing, we recommend bringing a pair of gumboots. All water testing equipment (and gloves) will be provided, and we will teach you how to use it.

Time commitment:

Events will be held approximately monthly, usually on a Sunday, each running for two to four hours. Locations, times and activities will vary. You don't need to come to every one, just come along to whichever ones interest you! We will let you know all the details for each upcoming event in advance.

The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
