Community Planting Day at Wairau Estuary (Milford)

Many of our estuarine environments are rapidly being degraded due to urban and industrial development. Extensive environmental testing has revealed the presence of heavy metals like zinc and copper, as well as bacteria, litter, and sediment, originating by run-off from industrial land, high traffic roads, and recreational activities in the estuary. Despite this, at least nine native freshwater fish and crustaceans are known to inhabit this waterway.

With support from passionate locals in Milford and Castor Bay and technical advice from Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters Team, the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board has committed funding to help restore the Wairau Estuary and beach in Milford.

On this day we will be planting hundreds of native trees, shrubs and grasses.

We provide all tools and equipment. You will need to bring gumboots

Please note that children 15 years and under are to be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

For this volunteer day you are welcome to meet us on site, or at our office in Eden Terrace to get a ride in our van (by prior arrangement).

Please contact info@cvnz.org.nz if you are interested in a group booking over 10 people.

Requirements:

What to wear: Please wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and something you don’t mind getting muddy (gumboots are strongly recommended), appropriate outdoor clothing (lightweight long sleeved clothing and trousers are needed to protect yourself from cuts and scratches and insect bites/stings).

Please bring with you a hat, raincoat/waterproof jacket, sunblock, a snack, full water bottle and any medication you may need (hayfever medication, inhalers etc).
