Nursery Work Support
Nursery work includes pricking out seedlings from seed trays into tubes and into planter bags, moving plants around the nursery as they transition from newly pricked out seedlings to mature ready-to-plant saplings, weeding around the standing out areas as well as removing weeds from planter bags, general tidying up and maintenance around the nursery to ensure it meets the highest nursery standards.
The aim is to propagate and raise up to 20,000 saplings (small trees) of a range of native plant species so that they are ready to plant on the island from May to August. Training in nursery work provided.
Nursery work is suitable for all levels of fitness. Much of the work involves standing at benches so a certain amount of mobility is required. Volunteers need to bring their own lunch and drinking water as there are no shops on the island.
An all day commitment is required as the nursery is located on Motutapu Island and access is by ferry (and truck, once on the island). The ferry leaves Downtown Auckland at 9:15am and returns at 4:00 (mid-week) or 5:00 (Sundays). Ferry cost is $31.50 return.
Our volunteer days are on Wednesday or sometimes on Friday during the week and twice a month on Sunday. Although a full day commitment is required, the amount of work done is no more than 4 hours due to travel time.
