Elder Support Assistant
Activities would range depending on the needs of residents – at times it may just be sitting with someone, sharing stories and providing companionship. Perhaps it would be taking them for a walk in the garden, baking or cooking together, reading to them or bringing in music to listen to together.
Our aim is to support residents growth and get them doing something meaningful to them, to help them to do something they have always enjoyed doing and this could be very different for each resident that you meet!
We’re an Eden Alternative home which focuses on reducing the loneliness, helplessness and boredom in residents lives as they age or experience disability. Therefore the role of volunteers revolves around companionship, close and continuous relationships and taking part in meaningful activities with residents in their daily lives.
The ideal volunteer has a big heart and loves helping and supporting others. We look for individuals who are empathetic, but also understand the importance of empowering residents to do what they can for themselves. We like to “do with” rather than “do for” where possible.
People who are comfortable communicating are ideal for this companionship role. We offer communication workshops for those who are interested but would like to gain more confidence first.
Criminal background check required.
The timing is flexible but we’d hope you could make at least a 6 month commitment in order to established a close and meaningful relationship with residents.
Once a relationship is established it is hoped you will visit weekly, fortnightly or monthly to continue to become closer to the residents.
