Ward Companion
Our friendly and welcoming Ward Companion Volunteers help to create a comfortable environment for patients, whanau and visitors by working closely with our healthcare professionals, providing essential non-clinical support. You will engage with patients through conversation and activities, help patients and whanau feel settled by offering a listening ear, provide amenities like hot beverages or extra blankets. You will also assist during mealtimes and support ward staff by assisting with general ward duties. You will meet a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds. Training and induction with ongoing support will be provided as well as the opportunity to build relationships and networks with people within our organisation and in our community.
We are seeking people with the following specific qualities:
Must be a good listener and communicator non-judgmental, with compassion and empathy.
Have the confidence to talk with patients and family/whaanau.
Good level of English is required, ability to speak other languages would be greatly welcomed
All applicants will be required to undergo a police check
You must be able to volunteer a minimum of one shift per week of 2-3 hours.
Times are flexible, with shifts available Monday to Friday - Morning and afternoons.
Across various Inpatient wards at Middlemore Hospital.
We require a commitment to volunteering for at least 6 months
