Guided walk guides

Guided walks are based on a preset route and a written format to assist guides and provide visitors with an overview of the island, its history and present management. They take about 2 hours to complete. Each walk needs a minimum of 4 people and has a maximum number of 15 adults/guide. We have run them for several years and they are popular, but we need more guides as our island staff can get busy and we need to spread the workload.
We provide travel by ferry and overnight accommodation if available.

Requirements:

You need to be a people person and able to communicate with all ages, levels of understanding and ethnicities as you must pace yourself to the differing needs of each group. It is important to be factual and keep personal opinions to yourself as you are representing the Rotoroa Island Trust. Our walk guide provides all the information you need to convey. You need to be fit and preferably have a first aid certificate. The walk goes from sea level to one of our highest points through regenerating forest. Training will be provided; new guides will also be buddied with a more experienced guide but once signed off will take walks by themselves.

Because we are a semi remote island with no medical facilities, we prefer our volunteers to be fully vaccinated.

Time commitment:

2 hours a day but may be more than 1 walk a day. However, because this is an island where access is by ferry volunteers would need to commit to a day minimum. If you are a boatie who wants to guide, you have more flexibility.
