Passionate about young people

Ana volunteers with CanTeen New Zealand

I decided to volunteer with CanTeen as I believe it’s important to raise awareness. I was surprised to find out that it is the only organisation in New Zealand that supports young people living with cancer in their lives.

I wanted to learn more about CanTeen, it has now been around for 30 years and it's really a place where young people can be themselves, share their feelings and know that there is always someone present for them. I chose CanTeen as my charity to volunteer because I am passionate about young people and I enjoy contributing to the community.

Volunteering was a natural step for me because I am a people person. I initially found it hard to stand on a street corner for an organisation I didn’t know a lot about. But my bubbly personality and dedication to helping young people with cancer came through. I decided to explain to the people walking by why their donation would make a difference to 13-24 year olds facing cancer.

Volunteering became about connecting. People stopped and asked me more about CanTeen. It felt good to know that I was helping make a difference for young people. One word at a time, one dollar at a time.

The thing I love most about volunteering is working with CanTeen people and supporters. From the staff to young people, fundraisers and partners. Everyone is open and welcoming. It is about giving back. I have been humbled and overwhelmed by the support. Simply put: I enjoy every moment, and volunteering is the perfect experience in giving and feeling good.

For me, I even decided to go the extra mile and I am now a Youth Support Coordinator at CanTeen, a job I love.
