Kaupapa Maori Based Volunteering – enriching your volunteer experience
Mahi aroha is the Te Reo term that most closely translates to the concept of voluntary work. Mahi aroha is the unpaid activity performed out of caring for others in accordance with the principles of tikanga to maintain mana and rangatiratanga, rather than for financial or personal reward. Whilst many of us have goals for our programmes and services to be culturally relevant and inclusive, the practice is more complex. This practical, one day workshop provides an opportunity to deepen your understanding of Maori values and world view and work out how to make your programmes and services more culturally relevant and engaging. Many of the motivations for volunteering, the problems experienced by volunteers, and the positive effects of volunteering on individuals, their families and communities can be common across cultures so this course will enable you to enrich the volunteering experience for the wide range of individuals and groups that your programmes touch.
