Engaging children with reading

Andrew is a Reading Oasis Superhero at United Way NZ:

I was looking for something interesting and rewarding to do with my time during a gap between paid jobs. I was open to voluntary work in general, having previously done voluntary and community-based work.

I came across the United Way Reading Oasis Programme when searching the web for voluntary work options in Auckland. Considering roles on their merits, I chose this one on the basis of the type of activity that United Way was offering.

Having come from a theatrical background, reading children's stories appealed to me and I had listened to many audio recordings of stories as a child.

I enjoy trying to make it engaging for the children. Ultimately, it is about making a difference for children who haven't been read to very much.

Connecting the Dots

The reason I decided to volunteer is because I am always looking for reasons for give back to the community.
