Be Bold, Make Change

International Volunteer Managers Day – 5 November 2025

For Carla van Walen, General Manager – Operations at Zero Waste Hub, the future of volunteering is inseparable from purpose, community, and climate action. “Volunteers are driving real change,” Carla says. “They’re helping communities move towards a circular, responsible, and connected future, where everyone feels a sense of belonging and contribution.”

At the Zero Waste Hubs, volunteers aren’t just giving time — they’re making bold contributions to climate action. Whether sorting donations, preparing furniture and clothing for resale, or working on the frontlines of recycling, volunteers play a direct role in diverting waste from landfill and supporting the circular economy.

“People volunteer to give something back,” Carla explains, “but they also seek community and purpose. Our volunteers connect over shared values and work together for a zero waste future where both people and the planet are respected and valued.”

Carla is taking courageous steps to make volunteering accessible, meaningful, and inclusive. By designing roles around the passions and skills of each individual, the Zero Waste Hub empowers people to turn care for the planet into tangible, everyday action.

“From day one, volunteers become part of the solution,”

Carla continues, “Everyone is included on the journey, and their efforts translate into real environmental impact.”

Her advice to fellow Leaders of Volunteer Engagement is grounded in kindness, honesty, and respect. “Be kind to yourself and your volunteers. Take time to listen and adapt. If your systems aren’t working, have the courage to change them. Make space for genuine connection. Volunteers give their time to uplift your mission — honour that commitment.”

Carla emphasizes that respect and authenticity foster lasting engagement. “Volunteers want to make a difference. Show them their contribution matters. Let them see the impact of their actions on the zero waste future we’re all working towards.”

For Carla, volunteering is more than helping out — it’s a bold, meaningful, and community-driven path to creating positive change for people and the planet.
