ESOL Home Tutor - former refugees, asylum seekers and migrants

As a volunteer home tutor, you will be matched to one of our learners and work with them in their home on a 1:1 basis to help develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and to participate in their local community. You will most likely make friends with your learner and their family through supporting them as they settle in New Zealand. You will have the satisfaction of making a difference in their lives and the experience may also give you a new outlook on life! Full training and support is provided.

Learners come from more than 50 different ethnic backgrounds and countries, including Afghanistan, Ukraine, Myanmar, Syria, Korea, China, Iran, Iraq, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam and others.

Requirements:

Volunteers must have excellent English language skills and have an interest in working with people from other cultures - it is not necessary to have been born in NZ. Also needed is a good understanding of Kiwi English, the ability to demonstrate good English writing skills, the desire to help learners develop their English skills and understand more about their local community, and a sound knowledge of local community services.

Volunteers need to be 18 years of age and a Police Check is required as the volunteer will be working with the client in their home.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

After the initial training is complete, approximately 1.5 hours per week is needed for this role. We are looking for an ongoing commitment of 6 months or longer.

3 training courses are run each year - please check the website for course dates. The course lasts a total of 24 hours and includes 4 assessment tasks. The cost to the volunteer of the training course is $40 (this is for the training manual).

In addition, there will be refresher workshops throughout the year that you can join to meet other volunteers and get new teaching ideas.

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by applying directly to the organisation. You will then be able to find out more about the role and how to proceed.
