Instagram mentor
The New Zealand Young Physicists’ Trust, (the Trust), enriches high-school physics to encourage more rangatahi into STEMM careers. We organise physics workshop and competitions that culminate in taking a New Zealand representative team to the International Tournament every year. In 2026, New Zealand placed 9th of 35 nations in Zurich, winning silver medals. In 2027 the international Tournament will be in Auckland.
Part of our communication strategy is an Instagram account that should engage with the level 2 and level 3 students (Y11 to Y13) who are interested in physics and the tournament. The objective is to increase awareness and participation. The account is nzypt_official and it is a business suite account. We need to be able to moderate posts as the account is aimed at teenagers.
It is part of our kaupapa to give students extra-curricular opportunities where appropriate. Our Instagram Coordinator is a Y12 student, selected for their interest in communications and using the work as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award portfolio. However, we are struggling to set them up for success. None of the Trustees are Instagram experts. Most of us don’t use the channel in a personal capacity. We need help!
This volunteering role has two objectives.
- Guide the Trust to set up our Instagram account(s) appropriately so the student coordinator can thrive. This includes determining what, if any, other applications are needed and setting up the analytics.
- Mentor the student coordinator to use the business suite as coordinator.
Experience running a youth focused Instagram account with a record of growing engagement is essential. This includes knowing how to set up the Business Suite account appropriately.
Evidence of own work will be required as part of the selection process.
We estimate this will be a six-month project that ends in a review of the improvements made and identifies what the Trust needs to put in place for ongoing needs.
The initial stage of onboarding and looking at what is needed will require the most time. We are unsure how long this will take. However, once a framework is in place for the student coordinator, the role will only take an hour a week.
