Instrument Maintenance Trainee
Sistema Aotearoa is looking for a practical, detail-oriented volunteer to join our team in a hands-on instrument maintenance role. This opportunity is ideal for someone who may not be a qualified or trainee luthier, but has an aptitude for careful, precise work and is keen to learn.
We are particularly interested in people who already enjoy fine woodworking, small repairs, or detailed hands-on projects, and are ready to apply those skills in a new context. If you’re a self-starter who takes pride in craftsmanship and is curious about how instruments work, this could be a great fit.
You’ll begin by supporting the upkeep of our instruments through basic maintenance tasks, such as restringing and simple repairs. Over time, and with guidance, you’ll build confidence and develop your skills further.
We can provide some tools, training, and mentorship, but this role will suit someone who is proactive, reliable, and motivated to learn by doing.
This role is focused on entry-level maintenance and care. More complex repairs are carried out by our network of professional external luthiers, who we value highly and continue to work closely with.
What you’ll gain:
- Practical, hands-on experience working with musical instruments
- Skill development in a supportive environment
- Insight into instrument care and maintenance
- The chance to contribute to making music accessible for young people
If you’re keen to develop your skills and be part of a meaningful community initiative, we’d love to hear from you.
All Sistema Aotearoa Trustees, staff, and volunteers are required to undergo appropriate police vetting checks.
