Flexibility and choice are key to this role, fitting your friendship into your life and deciding together the things that you will do. The relationship is one to one. This means that you spend time with only one person, so you both get to know each other in order to develop a genuine friendship. Have you got a love for the outdoors and photography? We are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic individual who would like to befriend someone with an intellectual disability in the Sunnyvale area. In addition to the great outdoors he also loves action movies, arcade games and dogs and he would love to connect with someone with a great sense of humour. Finding a like-minded person will really mean such a lot to him and hopefully create a long and positive friendship. You will be fully supported through training and ongoing support from a Volunteer Coordinator. This ensures you feel confident and well prepared for the friendship By taking a moment to connect with someone with an intellectual disability you can make a massive difference in their life. Not only will you have a great time with your friend but you will help to improve their quality of life and help them to achieve goals and become more involved in their own community. IHC is on the look-out for people like you. We welcome applicants from all walks of life, who have a clean police record, a warm heart and big desire to support others. We offer a full induction and orientation programme for new volunteers. We also provide ongoing training with specific emphasis on understanding intellectual disability, communication and first aid. Applicants are required to be police vetted.
This is entirely flexible and for you to work out with your friend, as a guideline most of our volunteers catch up with their friends for a couple of hours every 2/3 weeks.
