Literacy Mentor - Papatoetoe High School

The REP volunteer literacy mentor role involves working one-on-one with a Year 9 student, supporting them with their literacy. REP sessions are mutually enjoyable – the students enjoy the fun, supportive environment and focussed time with their mentor, and the volunteers also love it – they know they are making a difference with each conversation they have, it's invigorating, and they meet other interesting adults. The volunteers work in coordinated teams so there is flexibility and support. REP volunteer teams are very collegial, warm and welcoming.

In a session, the volunteer and student select a text to read from a reading box filled with a variety of interesting texts, suitable for different reading levels. The texts come with built-in comprehension questions designed to support the students’ understanding and form a springboard for discussion. The volunteer and student then read through the text, discuss the key points and answer the comprehension questions together, as well as having wider discussion. No preparation is required and the readers are easy and straightforward to use!

REP at Papatoetoe High School is on Thursdays 11.30am - 12.30pm.
