Roots of Empathy Whanau
Roots of Empathy is a programme for primary school children. The programme’s aim is to increase empathy – the ability to understand how another person feels. At the heart of the programme is a parent and baby, a “Tiny Teacher”.
Children learn care for and respect each other, resulting in less bullying and aggression. Research on Roots of Empathy from three continents confirms its impact as an effective Mental Health and Wellbeing programme, Social and Emotional Learning programme and Bullying Prevention programme. Students who participate in Roots of Empathy are proven to be more caring, helpful, inclusive and kind.

A parent and baby make 9 visits the classroom, over the course of a school year, alongside a Roots of Empathy Instructor.
The visits are about 30 minutes long, once a month.
The programme helps children to learn about the needs of the baby and how babies develop.
They observe the loving attachment relationship between the parent and baby.
Baby needs to be between 2 and 4 months old in April 2025
