You can provide crucial, immediate support to disabled individuals facing urgent challenges, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Citizen Advocacy seeks dedicated volunteers to serve as Crisis Advocates, offering essential, short-term intervention during vulnerable moments. You'll work alongside individuals with disabilities, addressing urgent issues until a long-term advocate can be recruited.

Why Crisis Advocates are Vital:

Disabled individuals often encounter unique challenges, especially during crises. Your role is to provide immediate, practical support, ensuring their needs are met and their rights are upheld. You act as a vital bridge, addressing urgent situations that cannot wait.

What Crisis Advocates Do:

You'll respond swiftly to urgent situations, offering immediate assistance and advocacy. Your focus is on resolving pressing issues and ensuring the individual's safety and stability until a long-term advocate can be assigned.

Examples of How You’ll Make a Difference:

Addressing Immediate Harm:
Intervene in situations involving physical threats, mental health crises, or neglect, prioritizing the individual's safety and well-being.
Example: Help a person with sensory sensitivities experiencing a panic attack in a crowded environment, by finding a quiet space and communicating their needs to support staff.
Preventing Homelessness:
Assist individuals facing eviction or housing instability, ensuring they have access to accessible and safe temporary housing.
Example: Aid a wheelchair user facing eviction by securing accessible emergency shelter and assisting with housing applications.
Facilitating Urgent Healthcare:
Ensure individuals receive timely and appropriate medical care, advocating for their communication needs and accessibility requirements.
Example: Accompany an individual with a communication disability to an emergency appointment, ensuring medical staff understand their communication methods.
Protecting from Exploitation and Abuse:
Address situations involving financial exploitation, abuse, or neglect, understanding the potential vulnerabilities faced by disabled individuals.
Example: Help an individual who is being financially exploited by a caregiver, by contacting appropriate authorities and providing support.

Knowledge of Local Resources and Services: Familiarity with community resources and services that can support individuals in crisis.
Experience in Advocacy or Social Services: Previous experience in advocacy, social work, or related fields.
Understanding of Legal and Ethical Considerations: Familiarity with relevant legal and ethical considerations.
Basic First Aid and/or Mental Health First Aid Training: Knowledge of basic first aid and/or mental health first aid principles.
Experience with vulnerable populations: Experience working with people who are vulnerable.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

As a Crisis Advocate, your time commitment will be flexible and responsive. This role suits volunteers available on an "as-needed" basis.
