Mentor for Young People
Upside supports young people, between 9-13 years old, who have been identified as needing an extra role model in their life, to help them journey through life at this time. Through the positive intervention of mentoring and having a caring adult, we aim to provide these young people with a sense of hope and belonging for a brighter future.
Research from ImpactLab showcases the incredible outcomes of Upside’s mentoring. Evidence shows that young people who have an Upside mentor in their life experience improvements including improved mental health, achieve higher at school and reduce the likelihood of addiction or criminal activity in later life . By choosing to be there as a mentor, you can truly change their world and life trajectory.
Not only will you make a profound impact on a young person's life, but 100% of Upside mentors surveyed reported they had benefited personally from 12 months of mentoring a young person. By getting involved and giving your time to make a difference, you can also experience personal growth and fulfilment.
We support young people across Auckland so will ensure we’re matching you with someone nearby (cause traversing Auckland's traffic ain’t fun!). Each of the young people (aged 9 - 13) we journey with have been referred to us by schools who believe a positive role model is what this young person needs to help navigate their current challenges.
Join us as a volunteer mentor today and be a part of this powerful journey toward positive change.
We do require Upside mentors to have a full drivers licence and vehicle, and must be willing to undergo a police check.
As an Upside mentor, you'll commit to meeting with your young person for just 2 hours each week for 12 months. This consistent support and guidance provide a stable foundation for these young individuals, who greatly benefit from having a mentor showing up each week and present in their lives.
We understand the importance of support and guidance for our mentors as well. Upside provides training, a dedicated Mentoring Coordinator for ongoing support ensuring you have the tools and resources needed to thrive in your role, and quarterly ‘Fuel Up’ evenings to upskill you along the journey of your mentoring role. We believe that together, we can create a safe and nurturing environment for these young people to thrive.
