Storyteller - Writer
Can you spin a good yarn? Are you great with the written word? Do you love meeting amazing people in the community? If so, helping us tell the stories of volunteering and the people who do it could be the perfect opportunity for you.
As volunteer storyteller/writer at Volunteering Auckland, you’ll be part of a small but enthusiastic team writing short articles for use on our website and social media. We love to tell stories that recognise and celebrate volunteers, people who lead volunteers, and the non-profits that do so much for so many in our communities. You’ll also be helping us to tell the story of Volunteering Auckland – and the many ways in which we support volunteering across the region.
You don’t have to have formal training or experience – although these are an advantage (along with great grammar and spelling!). What you do need is a natural curiosity, a flair for storytelling, the ability to spot the best ‘angle’ for a story and ask the right questions, and the adaptability to change your game plan if a better story angle comes up during the interview. And, of course, you need to be a ‘people person’ who is happy to interview strangers.
Our stories have a more flexible magazine-feature style, rather than a rigid news style. You need to able to find the heart of each story – and describe the people and what they do in a way that inspires others to want to do it to. And if you can take a decent photograph (a good quality mobile phone will do the trick), that’s even better!
It's a completely flexible role – where you work from home, and set up interviews at times that suit you to visit the people you’re interviewing. You decide how much time you’re able to commit. You'll need your own transport to enable face-to-face interviewing, is a definite advantage.
Whether you’re building a writing portfolio towards future career opportunities, or simply want an outlet for your natural writing flair – this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
Training and experience in writing and journalism, and the ability to take photographs, are an advantage.
Hours are flexible to suit
