Multicultural Playgroup Volunteer

We support former refugees and migrants to settle into their new lives in New Zealand. We are looking for volunteers to be part of the team in the Manurewa and Henderson areas to work with young children 0-5 years old, in a multicultural playgroup setting.

Our playgroups provide a supportive and inclusive environment where the families can have fun playing and learning together, an opportunity for mothers to improve their English and make new friends, to become more connected with their local community and to help their children to become more school-ready.

Free English classes are available for the mothers during the playgroup session, which is why we need volunteers to play with the children, and to help run children’s activities such as painting, playdough, reading with children, etc.

Requirements:

Volunteers with empathy towards refugee and migrant groups would be most suitable. In addition volunteers need to be extremely reliable, have good initiative and be culturally sensitive. Previous experience in working with children is desirable. The ability to speak other languages is an added advantage.

Criminal background and reference checks are a prerequisite. Placement may take place while the criminal check is being done however reference checks will be done prior to placement.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

The playgroups take place only during school terms. There are 3 playgroup sessions during the week, each session is 3 hours in duration typically run from 9am to midday. Volunteers need to be available for at least 2 of the 3 sessions within a given week. We are looking for an ongoing commitment.
