Giving back to the community

Mike and Marilynn volunteer with Meals On Wheels

Why did you decide to volunteer?
After retiring and enjoying many years of family life, we both decided to try and put something back into the community. Volunteering seemed the ideal way, and we are both members of a number of volunteer groups including NZ Red Cross Meals On Wheels, St John, World Vision and Community Patrol.

Why did you choose this particular organisation?
As we are both retired and were familiar with the Meals On Wheels concept, it was an obvious choice for us. We live in a retirement village and our deliveries over the years have included a number of our fellow villagers.

What is it you really enjoy about your role and volunteering?
The Meals On Wheels role is particularly rewarding in that the recipients are of course always most welcoming when they receive their meals, but at the same time we can stop and have a friendly chat with them which they seem to appreciate.
