It’s okay to fail – getting better at social media workshop

Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest and other social networks have many intricacies for people to master. It takes a lot of time and effort to be effective. Then, things change.

We’re often so busy on the day-to-day stuff that we are unable to think about how things are really tracking.

To learn some tools and models which will help you assess progress with your organisation’s social media forays, Volunteering Auckland and Common Knowledge are co-hosting a workshop on 13th May.

Renowned trainer and writer Beth Kanter will lead the workshop entitled “Be Networked, Use Measurement and Create Change through Social Media”.

One of the hazards with any approach to measurement is that more time and effort goes into capturing data, then taking action.

A key message Beth will bring is to it’s okay to fail. She suggests learning the art of placing small bets or making affordable losses that can lead to innovation.

Addressing this topic on her blog in January, Beth says:

…people and organizations need to shift to the growth mindset when it comes to implementing social media – and working networks – and incorporate a steady program of measurement and learning.

But often, our feelings of shame or the blame gets in the way. When I asked nonprofits if they do an after action review, many say yes, but it often turns in pointing fingers and people hunching their shoulders.

Beth is certainly not afraid to try things and publicly admit if it didn’t work out.

All this rests on some form of measurement. There is no single best way to do this, as each organisation and what they’re striving for is different. Counting likes and other statistics is definitely not enough.

Beth will outline a seven-step approach so your organisation not only measures but also uses the results. Importantly, some goal posts need to be in place before you start measuring.

Support for the event has been provided by Auckland Council, Microsoft NZ, Volunteering Auckland and Connecting Up.
