Conversation Partner - Pakuranga

We are looking for volunteers to become a conversation partner with someone who has communication difficulties following a stroke. As a conversation partner you will provide your client with a great opportunity to enjoy social conversation. Following training you will be matched with someone who lives in your area and with whom you share some interests. You will visit your client once a week for about an hour to enjoy conversation, using supportive communication strategies. Through these partnerships, our clients build confidence in participating in community life and and volunteers gain communication skills through training. You will be well supported by a speech language therapist and coordinator.

You will need to be a good listener and be interested in learning about different ways of communicating. Volunteers must be fluent in both verbal and written English and be able to speak confidently and clearly. Your own transport is helpful but not essential.

Because we are working within the Health mandate , all our volunteers are required to be fully vaccinated against Covid (3 vaccinations).

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

One visit a week for about an hour, at a time mutually agreed with your client. Attendance at training is required.
