Education Team Volunteer

Kelmarna Gardens is an organic community garden and city farm dedicated to building a healthy community and environment, and promoting sustainable living. Kelmarna belongs to the community and is primarily run by volunteers, and everyone has something to contribute.

One of the pillars of our charitable organisation is education, working to make the unique environment and resources on the farm available for children of all ages from schools across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland to learn in and enjoy.

Our Education Programme is looking for volunteers to join the Education Team, who help deliver lessons and activities for visiting school groups. We need some enthusiastic individuals to help us provide engaging, inquiry- and nature-based learning experiences on the farm. This mahi is an essential part of bringing our space to life, working directly to connect the next generation with essential skills for a more sustainable future.

As an Education Team Volunteer, you will be able to help facilitate groups of children during a variety of hands-on activities on the farm. Sessions are planned by our Education Manager to address a range of learning objectives, a process which you will have an opportunity to contribute to as a member of the team. There’s guaranteed to be variety, both in terms of the groups we work with – large and small, early childhood to young adults – and in terms of our schedule, based around bookings during the school terms and with holiday programs in between.

You don’t need to be a professional educator to take part, nor an experienced gardener either – you just need a passion for working with children to explore, discover, and learn while having fun! You will be supported by our Education Manager as well as the rest of the Education Team to be in the best position possible to deliver content and lessons in the authentic context of Kelmarna Gardens Community Farm.

An enthusiastic attitude; the ability to safely and effectively guide, support, and otherwise care for groups of children and students; a willingness to be police vetted and to abide by our Education Programme guidelines.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

The Education Team schedule is variable, depending on bookings during the school terms and over holiday periods. This means an availability on weekdays during school hours, and in communication with the Education Manager to confirm session bookings and times. You don’t need to attend every single session – the Education Team will work together to make sure at least enough people are on board to successfully host any given visit, depending on group size, age, and session content. We are very open to individual arrangements, where perhaps you’re able to join in sessions as often as they arise, or more selectively as and when it suits you, or we can reach out sparingly when we really need you.

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
