Chairperson, Devonport Peninsula Trust

We are seeking a Chairperson to lead the board of six trustees for the Devonport Peninsula Trust (DPT). DPT has operated since 2010 to promote a sense of community and wellbeing in the area known as the Devonport Peninsula. The trust employs the Devonport Community Coordinator to run community events and promotes ecological projects through the restoring Takarunga Hauraki project.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys being engaged in the local community. It would suit someone who has governance and leadership skills and time during the day to engage with other community leaders and the staff of DPT. The chair role is expected on average to take 4 hours per week.

DPT employs the Devonport Community Coordinator, responsible for day-to-day management duties. It also umbrellas the Restoring Takarunga Hauraki (RTH) project; the ecological restoration programme for the Devonport peninsula, employing two independent contractors. The Devonport Community Coordinator works from our office located at A12 The Barracks, Fort Takapuna Reserve in Vauxhall Rd, Devonport. The Chair would assist the Devonport Community Coordinator, RTH staff and the Board in an advisory capacity with guidance on strategic matters. The Board currently comprises six people who bring a range of skills encompassing the sectors important to the Devonport community; namely community facilities, arts, culture, and heritage, as well as a passion that drives them to maintain and deliver a programme of community services and activities in a business-like and professional manner.

Requirements:

• Availability to attend Board meetings 8:30am on the third Thursday of every month at the DPT office.
• Be available from time to time between monthly meetings to assist the Community Coordinator, RTH staff and Board with routine matters, either by phone, email and/or the occasional visit.
• It would be an advantage if the applicant was located within easy traveling distance of the DPT office in Devonport.
• Prior experience on a board of trustees and/or acting as a Chair.
• A strong understanding of community and not-for-profit organisations. A strong understanding of the Devonport peninsula community would be an advantage.
• An understanding of Auckland Council operations and processes.
• Ability to develop a rapport and strengthen relationships with key community stakeholders.
• An easy going, tolerant, good humoured, community minded person would fit in well with our Board culture.

On average, the role requires approximately 4 hours per week.
