Conversation Partner - Pukekohe, Pokeno

We are looking for volunteers in the Pukekohe and Pokeno area, to become conversation partners with people who have communication difficulties following a stroke. As a Conversation Partner you will provide your client with a great opportunity to enjoy social conversation. Following training, you will be matched with someone who lives in your area and with whom you share some interests. You will visit your client each week for about an hour to enjoy conversation, using supportive communication strategies. Some of our volunteers support conversation groups. Through the opportunity to have supported conversation, our clients build confidence in participating in community life. Volunteers gain communication skills through training and are well supported by a speech language therapist and coordinator.

You will need to be a good listener and be interested in learning about different ways of communicating. Volunteers must be fluent in both verbal and written English and be able to speak confidently and clearly. Your own transport is helpful but not essential.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

One visit a week for about an hour, at a time mutually agreed with your client. Training is delivered in the local area. Attendance is required.
Client visits need to take place during the working week ie. Monday - Friday

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
