Outdoor Avian Assistant
We are a very busy bird rescue organisation and as the spring/summer season draws near our workload increases with the care, rehabilitation and release of New Zealand's wild birds. If you love being outside in our Great Outdoors, rain, hail or shine and would enjoy the opportunity to maintain your fitness while caring for and (at times) handling amazing birds then this is the role for you. Tasks may include: Ensuring our birds have fresh food and water, Completing cleaning to Animal Welfare standards, Replenishing bird bedding, Relocating birds to different pens and aviaries, Checking for any missing, ill or injured birds, Tidying and maintaining areas.
As we operate 7 days per week we have various shifts available to assist with rehabilitation of NZ wild birds and releasing them back into their environment. Training is given on site and you will be supported by and working alongside the Outdoor Avian staff.
This role involves lifting, bending, carrying equipment and walking throughout the day. You will need to be physically fit and able, adaptable to outdoor elements such as mud and changeable weather, and have plenty of energy and enthusiasm to help while learning more about our amazing bird life. You will need to wear good outdoor gear, including wet weather pants and a jacket. Appropriate and safe footwear, such as comfortable steel capped boots, is also recommended.
As we operate 7 days per week we have various shifts available to suit the volunteer. They range from 8:00am to midday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm, or if you prefer all day (8:00-5:00pm).
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
