Prison / Community mentors
We are looking for volunteers to visit prisoners 3-6 months pre-release - The purpose of the role is to develop constructive support linking prisoners with the outside world and maintaining this until support upon release till the support is no longer required or desired.
These visits will happen either weekly or fortnightly pending availability. PARS covers from Mercer to Cape Reinga, the visits will occur at one of the four Northern Correctional Facilities. (Northland Region Corrections Facility, Auckland Prison Albany, Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility Wiri, Auckland South Corrections Facility Wiri.
The volunteer will be supported and supervised by the Volunteer Coordinator. Further details will be provided at our training after which the volunteer will be matched up with a prisoner who has been approved to be released to our service. All mileage and out of pocket reimbursed.
The ideal candidates will be reliable and non-judgmental, punctual, personable, have good listening skills and patience. Maturity and cultural sensitivity would be an advantage. Applicants must be over 21 and have a full clean license. You will need your own transport and the vehicle must be warranted and registered.
Because of the nature of the role the volunteer must complete a Police Vetting Form and Department of Corrections Third Party Clearance Application to become a Specified Visitor. Two character referees are required.
Required to attend a compulsory PARS Volunteer 3 hour training session held on Sunday afternoons from 3pm – 6pm. Trainings are held monthly. Must also attend a prison induction and monthly supervision. Further training available.
