Shopping Helper

We are currently looking for a volunteer to help our Social Worker based at the ASST Hostel in Blockhouse Bay with tasks primarily related to shopping and collection and distribution of donated food to ensure our client’s basic needs are met. Key tasks are: food shopping, collection and distribution of donated food, any other form of shopping to meet our clients’ needs, providing other client support in agreement with the Social Worker.

The volunteer will be supervised and supported by ASST's registered Social Worker. While the volunteer will work autonomously, the Social Worker will be available as their 'go-to' person both on-site and by email/phone.


Ability to act responsibly with money and to ‘spot a bargain’. Have an understanding of issues relating to being a refugee/asylum seeker and have the ability to empathise with clients. Efficient time management experience required. Experience and ability to work with people from a range of backgrounds. Have at least 2 years’ experience driving in New Zealand and a clean driving record. Must have access to a car – work related mileage reimbursed.
As you will be working with vulnerable adults and children a Police Check will be required. When applying for this role please forward your CV and a cover letter to the coordinator.

Time commitment:

WE expect the role to take up to 6 hours per week spread over 1 or 2 days. Preferably this would be a Thursday but Monday, Tuesday or Friday are also possible. We are looking for an ongoing commitment for this role.
