Companions

We aim to support and educate children through difficult changes that they have experienced recently through creative and fun activities. We are looking for volunteers to train as facilitators for small groups of children who have had a loss of a close relative or a family separation.

The programme lasts for 8 weeks during term time. If the volunteer is able, we put them in a school with another Companion and the 2 Companions take the group for that term. Each term is usually at different schools, from primary, intermediate and high school. The children in one group will be of a similar age.

Requirements:

The volunteer is trained on how to facilitate the programme and all resources are provided. Companions work in 2’s and the coordinator will debrief with the volunteer after each session. It is important that the Companion has not had a recent loss of any sort themselves.

As the volunteer will be working with vulnerable children a Police Check will be provided.

Time commitment:

The time required is about an hour and a half each week, at a local school on a designated week day of choice. The Companions will also do a planning session by phone or a meeting to plan the following session.

Getting started:
The first step is to have a preliminary consultation with Volunteering Auckland to discuss the role in more detail, please complete the form below and we will be in touch shortly.
