Art and Craft Teachers

We plan to offer a variety of art and craft based classes to a group of profoundly Deaf adults during, and we are looking for volunteers who have the experience and skill to teach crafts and craft projects. The classes are held in Mt Eden on a Thursday.

The craft projects should be projects that can be taught within a 10am 2pm time frame. The volunteers will need to have experience in their choice of craft and with teaching others. They would need to be able to break down the learning experience into manageable steps with instructions being visual rather than written as "hands on" lessons are more practical with Deaf people. A Deaf Community Support Worker and a NZSL interpreter will be present at the classes. We are able to help the volunteer with planning the class as the needs for Deaf are not the same as those when teaching to hearing people.

Many Deaf people lead isolated lives and are not exposed to arts and crafts that the hearing community have access to, these classes and your support will offer the Deaf to experience a wider variety of arts and craft techniques in a Deaf friendly environment.

Requirements:

You will need to be passionate about the craft/ project you are teaching and ideally you will have taught the project before. Some experience with NZSL is helpful but an open mind to learning some NZSL during the day is essential. There will be an interpreter present.

When applying for the role please let us know in the comments box what kind of project or craft you would like to teach to enable us to plan a programme and secure resources.

Time commitment:

Classes will be taught fortnightly on a Thursday throughout the year, generally from 10am to 2pm.

Getting started:
The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
